Ilya is 17 years old and comes from Odessa. A year ago, his life was like that of any other teenager: college, the gym, friends, computers and dreams for the future. But everything changed in a single day when doctors discovered a malignant brain tumour – medulloblastoma – during a medical examination.
In early February 2024, Ilya underwent a complex operation at Okhmatdyt. It led to serious complications – cerebral ischaemia, a week in a coma, a month in intensive care and severe neurological disorders.
This was followed by two more operations to insert a tracheostomy and a gastrojejunostomy. This was followed by a difficult course of complex treatment with chemotherapy and radiation therapy, which was complicated by significant neurological deficits (cerebellar mutism, tetraparesis, pseudobulbar syndrome (swallowing disorder), convulsive syndrome, and depressive stupor).
Chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and endless days of fighting for his life.
Despite all the doctors' predictions, in February 2025, Ilya completed his cancer treatment and went into remission .
Now Ilya has a difficult road to recovery ahead of him.
With your support, the Foundation paid for Ilya's rehabilitation course in Modrychi.
"Thank you, the Foundation and all caring people, for this opportunity, which brings us closer, with every session, every step, to our most desired goal - Ilya's return to a full life.Without you and your help, we would not have had this opportunity. Every step, every small victory for Ilya is our joint achievement. Thank you all very much ," says the boy's mother, sharing his results:
His muscles have strengthened — he has become more resilient and walks more confidently with a walker (still with the support of a kinesiotherapist).
His tremors have decreased — now Ilya can perform fine motor skills with his hands: move objects, pour grains with a spoon, collect beads.
He is becoming increasingly independent in everyday tasks.
He has made significant progress with his speech therapist: he can control his drooling, has learned to swallow fruit puree without aspiration, and is trying to read words and phrases. His speech is becoming clearer every time.
This is tremendous progress that few would have believed possible a year ago. But thanks to constant training, Ilya's incredible strength of spirit, and the support of caring people, he is confidently moving towards his most important goal: returning to a full life.
🙏 We sincerely thank everyone who supports the Foundation.
