While sirens and explosions rang out over Kharkiv, a real miracle took place at the Prof. O.I. Meshchaninov Emergency Hospital — the life of 12-year-old Sashko from Odessa was saved. The boy, who experienced up to 20 epileptic seizures a day, successfully underwent replacement of his neurostimulator — a device that helps combat severe forms of epilepsy.
This unique method of VNS therapy can be performed in Ukraine thanks to the only certified team of doctors led by neurosurgeon Oleksandr Erikovich Dukhovsky. Most importantly, Sasha's operation was made possible thanks to the support of the Bonum Ukraine charitable foundation, which quickly raised 1,488,280 hryvnias to purchase the neurostimulator and electrode.
The Bonum Ukraine Foundation mobilised quickly. Thanks to thousands of caring people who donated 10 hryvnias each, the necessary amount was quickly raised.
VNS therapy is a modern method of treating drug-resistant epilepsy. It significantly reduces the frequency and severity of epileptic seizures. The neurostimulator sends electrical impulses to the vagus nerve, which helps the brain stabilise electrical activity. This is a chance for a normal life for children who have been exhausted by seizures for years.
Sasha has been saved!
The donation amount is non-refundable, and the funds are distributed among the foundation's projects
