A rehabilitation machine for Mykhailo!

At two months old, Mykhailo suffered a stroke and was subsequently diagnosed with the most severe form of cerebral palsy in children — bilateral hemiplegia.

Today, he cannot walk or sit unaided, and he finds it difficult to hold his head up. Symptomatic epilepsy and partial loss of vision further complicate his journey towards independence.

But his parents are doing everything they can to ensure their child has a childhood. They take him to the nursery, which he adores.

He loves sitting in his special chair and listening intently to the children’s laughter and chatter. He’s delighted, smiles and claps his fists.

He loves children’s songs and even sounds that are special to him — the engines of cars, tractors and lawnmowers.

He also adores the moments when his mum takes off his orthoses. Then he can just lie on the sofa, roll around in all directions and play freely, just like any other child.

Mykhailo is learning to keep his balance, trying to pick up toys, offering his hand when asked, recognising the voices of his loved ones, and gradually getting used to his orthoses. Behind every little skill like this lie hours of practice, the child’s own efforts, his mum’s patience and persistent rehabilitation.

The ‘Bonum Ukraine’ Charitable Foundation has joined in to help Mykhailo and has purchased a Motomed Viva arm and leg exercise machine for him, so that he can continue on his challenging journey towards new skills and achievements.
